Achiteotl (MH507r)

Achiteotl (MH507r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Achiteotl gives a frontal view of the upper body and head of an anthropomorphic figure with a raised hand and wild hair. The visual may suggest divinity, which is part of the name (-teotl). The start of the name, Achi- means "a little." So, the name might translate "a little bit divine" or "a little divinity"--?

Added Analysis:

One might see in this drawing something of an apparition, perhaps a figure in the mind of an Indigenous Christian--? The extra lines coming off of the figure's body may suggest movement. The Codex Mendoza has a much recurring glyph for teotl that is a half sun (see below), nothing like this figure. Sometimes, in the Matrícula de Huexotzinco, the Teo- prefix of a name is triggered phonetically with a stone (tetl), as in Teoxoch and Xochiteotl. But in another example of Teoxoch, a face is drawn to represent the teotl syllable.
