Atle Itil (MH852r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Atle Itil (“He Has No Cape”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a person in a sitting position, facing the viewer’s right, with his knees raised and his arms lifted somewhat in front of him. He is naked. Seated inside a building is the person who bears this name, which suggests that he is a lord (tecuhtli). But the person of the glyph looks vulnerable, and the name sounds needy, which is somewhat ironic.

Added Analysis:

Another person with a similar name is Atle Itilma, also shown as a nude, vulnerable man (see below). Another even more popular name is Atle Icuauh, perhaps “He Has No Firewood,” which seems even more pitiful.
