Ce Toch (MH719r)
Simplex Glyph
Notation

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of a combined simplex glyph and notation for the personal name (and date) Cetoch (One Rabbit, 1-Rabbit) shows a rabbit (tochtli) head in profile facing the viewer's right. Its coat is textured. It has long ears that stand up. To the right of its head is a circle that is left unpainted (white or natural) that represents the number one (ce). This is a calendrical name from the religious divinatory, 260-day calendar, the tonalpohualli. The rabbit stands for the day name.

Added Analysis:

By the time of this manuscript, the clergy had been working to get the Nahuas to stop using the divinatory calendar. Sometimes the day names have been dropped, and sometimes the numbers have disappeared. But here, the person’s name retains both parts. The name merges the number and the day name from Ce Tochtli to Cetoch.
