cozatli (FCbk11f14r)
This iconographic example, featuring a weasel (cozatli, also called a cozama), is included in this digital collection for the purpose of making comparisons with related hieroglyphs. The term selected for this example comes from the text near the image in the Digital Florentine Codex. There is no gloss, per se. This example shows an animal in profile, facing right, and starting to stand up on its hind legs, because the front paws are up off the ground slightly. The coat is a terracotta color, with the exception that the face has some gray spots.

This animal is apparently a weasel (cozatli), which can also be called a cozama, as it is in the Florentine Codex. Another close term is the cozantli, which apparently refers to a lynx. That the animal in this iconographic example is a weasel is supported by the fact that the Spanish-language text in the DFC says comadreja (weasel).
