Matlacmani (MH482v)

Matlacmani (MH482v)
Simplex Glyph
Notation

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This combined notation and simplex glyph (which virtually creates a compound) for the personal name Matlacmani (perhaps "To Be Like Ten," or "Ten Hands") shows a sign for the notation of ten (matlactli) that is used in the Huexotzinco area. Below that is the simplex glyph that is a frontal view of a (right) human hand (maitl), phonetically signaling the second part of the name, -mani ("to be a certain way").

Added Analysis:

See below for two other representations of the number ten, as a group of ten ones (small circles, colored variously). This diamond shape for 10 can be found in various codices from Huexotzinco (see the publications of Baltazar Brito Guadarrama).
