Matlactli Once Tochtli (TR29r)

Matlactli Once Tochtli (TR29r)
Simplex Glyph
Notation

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This is a multicolored painting of the simplex glyph and notation for the year date, Matlactli Once Tochtli. The glyph is a profile view of the head of a rabbit (tochtli) facing toward the viewer's right. The rabbit is a turquoise blue. Above the rabbit are two horizontal rows of five small circles painted turquoise blue, too, plus one more small blue circle below that, on its own. This works out to a mathematical equation of 5 + 5 + 1, as though the notation is based on the counting of fingers. The background is red. A turquoise blue box surrounds this year date. Year dates are typically boxed in this way. The color is a phonetic indicator, calling forth the word xihuitl, which is both turquoise and "year."
