Teucchopitl (MH680r)

Teucchopitl (MH680r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Teucchopitl (or Tecuhchopitl) is attested here as a man’s name. The meaning has yet to be deciphered, but it may be about a bird or an enslaved person, in which case the diadem is a phonetic indicator for the first two syllables (Tecu-). The glyph shows a profile view (facing right) of a diadem of the type worn by a lord (teuctli, although also spelled tecuhtli). It has a tie for the back of the head, a triangular shape with a mesh pattern, and a white border. The border at the top is somewhat fringed. The -chopitl part of the name is not shown visually, or at least not obviously. Chopitl is the name of a famous enslaved person in history, and there is a house associated with the name.
