tlacuiloque (MH520r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This is a black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the occupation of tlaquiloque (or tlaquiloqueh with the glottal stop), the plural of tlacuilo, notary, painter, or writer. It shows a human hand holding a paintbrush at an angle. The brush is very thin. The top of the implement has a round knob. The hand is in a kind of fist position.

Added Analysis:

Tracking the implements with which tlacuilos wrote will show a variety of shapes and designs. The hands are often holding the implements in a fist position, which seems different from the European method and may be Indigenous. Mastering tiny details, for instance when drawing insects, shows the degree of control the tlacuilos had in using these instruments. Ian Mursell, editor of Mexicolore, published a study of the implements on 3 May 2020.
