xayacatl (Mdz40r)
This example of iconography for mask or face (xayacatl) is provided here for the purpose of making comparisons with face hieroglyphs. This example is a mask in profile, lying horizontally, with the top of the head on the viewer's left. It is colored turquoise, which adds to the interpretation of mask here, in lieu of simply "face."

Below right are other examples of the xayacatl (face, mask). The frontal view seems rare, and the profile the norm. This one, lying down, would also be unusual where "face" is meant in place of "mask."
