Calmecahuatecuhtli (MH908r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the title Calmecahuatecuhtli (perhaps “Lord of the School” or the “Lord of Calmecahuacan”) shows a noble in profile, seated and facing the viewer’s right. He wears a diadem with two borders, one with eyes, and the main part with a dotted diamond pattern. His cloak is tied on his right shoulder and covers most of his body, although his right side is uncovered, showing a loincloth waistband. The cloak has shading that gives it a three-dimensionality. He sits on a low stool with stepped legs.

Added Analysis:

The spelling of what must be meant to be tecuhtli is unusual here, with an inserted “i” and “c.” This unusual spelling also appears on f. 904v. The “Tecui-” start to a name does appear in name ending in the diminutive -ton (see below).
