Citlalpopocatzin (LTlaxUT1b)
This iconographic example is included here for possible comparisons with Nahuatl hieroglyphs. It features a Tlaxcallan noble male named Citlalpopocatzin (or Citlalpopoca, leaving off the reverential suffix). The first part of his name is obscured by some wear to the manuscript page, but fortunately he is well known. In this image is the head of another noble, not named, who is also from the Tlaxcallan region. These and other elite men have come out to greet Hernando Cortés on his expeditionary march to Tenochtitlan. They are shown in a profile view facing left. The men wear a hairstyle that may be regional or influenced by their status. Their hair is long on their necks with a tie or known just below their jaws. They have short bangs, primarily in the middle of their foreheads.

The name Citlalpopoca says, “The Star Smokes,” and refers to a “Comet.” While this particular man does not have a name glyph next to his head, one can see three other Nahuatl hieroglyphs for Citlalpopoca below. For more information on this historic encounter with Cortés, see the History of the Chichimeca Nation, eds. Amber Brian, et al. (2019, 259–260).
