Huitzilapan Xochitl (MH907r)

Huitzilapan Xochitl (MH907r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Huitzilapan Xochitl (literally, “Hummingbird-Canal Flower”) is attested here as a woman’s name. The glyph shows swirling water (atl, or apantli) with a hummingbird (huitzilin) head in profile facing right and coming out of the water near the top. The water is shown in a bird’s eye view. The flower (xochitl) part of the name is not shown visually.

Added Analysis:

The -apan suffix to the first part of this name could mean “on the water,” and it does not have to be a canal. But the Huitzilapan in the Codex Mendoza does show a canal, so it is a possibility. Also, perhaps this woman’s name simply refers to her as the “Flower of Huitzilapan,” intending the place name to be retained as part of the name.
