Ilcahualoc (MH782v)
This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Ilcahualoc (perhaps “Long Forgotten”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a man’s head in profile, looking toward the viewer’s right. This may be a semantic reference to someone left behind. A large hand hovers to the left of this human head. The hand may be a phonetic indicator for the “hua” in the middle of the name.

This is a somewhat rare name in the Matrícula de Huexotzinco. Below are two examples of the name Cahualoc (“Abandoned”). One has a head and a hand, much like this glyph. Being left or abandoned has some association with widows and widowers, but there may be more to the concept. With ilcahualoc, being abandoned for a long time apparently results in being forgotten. The “il-” start to the term may be shared with ilhuitl (day), bringing a temporal dimension to being left.
