Xiuhnel (Verg46v)
This compound Nahuatl hieroglyph is a black-line drawing of the personal name Xiuhnel ("Incapable," "Morning Star," or "Cloud Serpent"), which is attested here as a man's name. The compound begins with a circular mosaic made with turquoise (xihuitl) tesserae. This provides the semantic start to the name (Xiuh-). Above the mosaic is an unidentified shape. Above that is a black bean, which provides the phonetic syllable -e- that corroborates the vowel sound at the end of the name.

Hieroglyphs for the name Xiuhnel very often include pieces of turquoise mosaic. Sometimes they also have herbs that are also called “xihuitl.”
