Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black and white drawing for a woman's personal name, Yohualli Yauh ("She Goes About at Night" or "The Water of the Night"), shows two concentric circles. The inner circle is painted nearly entirely black. White specks in this black area could be inadvertent. This circle seems to suggest night time (yohualli). The verb (yauh, to go)--or possibly the possessed water--is not shown visually. The "yauh" only appears in the gloss.

Added Analysis:

The Yauh part of the name intend possessed water (i- + atl = yauh). So the translation could be, alternatively, the "Water of the Night." The use of yauh throughout this collection could use further investigation. The conceptualization of the night sky as round with a white band around it is also something to watch, as it looks something like glyphs for rubber (olli).
