Patlan (MH680v)

Patlan (MH680v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Patlan (perhaps “He Flew” or “It Flew”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a profile view of a vertical flag (pamitl or panitl) in profile, tied to a pole, flying toward the viewer’s right. The flag provides a phonetic indication for the start to the name, Pa-. Below the flag is a jaw with teeth (tlantli), which provides a phonetic indication for the -tlan ending to the name. Thus, this is a compound that is fully phonetic.
