Cacha (MH904v)

Cacha (MH904v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Cacha (or Acacha, “Locust”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a large, vertical locust (acachatl), with its head upward. To the left of the insect’s head is a small building in profile, apparently a home (chantli). This latter element provides a phonetic indicator for the -cha of acachatl. If the name is really Cacha and not Acacha, perhaps both visual elements are phonetic indicators, and the compound is fully phonographic.

Added Analysis:

Acachatl can also mean grasshopper, but chapulin is much more common for grasshopper. The gloss here had the first name as Pedro and then changed it to Martín (both abbreviated), scribbling out Pedro.
