calli (Mdz67r)
Iconography

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This example of iconography, which is glossed "casa" (house in Spanish), is included here as a point of comparison for glyphs in the collection that are glossed "calli" (house in Nahuatl. It is interesting for its frontal view, whereas most examples of calli show a profile view. The building is white, and the beams framing the entrance, along with the roof, are all a terracotta color. It is difficult to tell if the roof has vertical planks or thatching.

Added Analysis:

Frontal views of calli in the Codex Mendoza (c. 1541) are the exception, and the profile the norm. Profiles can face right or left. The Matrícula de Huexotzinco (1560) has both views, but the frontal is somewhat less rare by that time, perhaps as a result of European influence.
