de Pomar (MH753r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name de Pomar (a name borrowed from Spanish) shows a frontal view of a right hand, possibly wearing a glove with stripes of intricate designs or wearing three bracelets. The hand (maitl) in this simplex glyph may be a phonetic indicator for the -ma- in Pomar.

Added Analysis:

This tribute payer may be named after Juan Bautista de Pomar, a mestizo born around 1535 who--much later in the century--wrote the Relación de Texcoco (Tetzcoco), a response to the request from the Spanish crown for information about different regions in the colony of New Spain. This relación is not a flattering portrait of Spanish colonialism. See José Espericueta, "Writing Virtue and Indigenous Rights: Juan Bautista de Pomar and the Relación de Texcoco," Hispania 98:2 (June 2015), 208-219. Alternatively, both men are named for a Spaniard named Pomar.
