Mahuiz (Verg42v)

Mahuiz (Verg42v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Mahuiz ("Person Worthy of Respect or Fear") is attested here as a man's name. The compound has three elements, all phonetic. It begins at the bottom with a hand (maitl), which provides the phonetic syllable at the start to the name, Ma-. It continues with a horizontal agricultural tool, the huictli, which provides the phonetic syllable -hui-. Finally, the third syllable is -huiz-, from a vertical thorn or spine (huitztli). The -hui- and -huiz- overlap, and the huictli is not really necessary, but it complements.
