Papa (MH703v)
This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Papa (or perhaps Papan) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a small human figure in profile, facing the viewer’s right. The person’s arms are raised out in front.

We are making an assumption that this name is Papa and not Papan, although the latter is a common name, and it is found in the gloss for this glyph. Papan is known in various sources for both men and women. Papan could have a different meaning (perhaps pamitl or pantli reduplicated, "Flags"?), or it could just have an intrusive final “n,” and Papa is intended in those names, too. Here, the name Papa has been selected as a short version of papaitl or papatli, which seem to refer to the hair of an Indigenous minister or priest, or the minister himself. These names deserve further research.
