Tepetlixpan (MH868v)
This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the place name Tepetlixpan (“In Front of the Mountain”) shows a hill or mountain (tepetl) with a large eye (ixtli) painted over it. The eye is a phonetic indicator for the locative suffix, -ixpan, in front of.
Stephanie Wood
Note how this eye has a European style, different from the starry eyes of the Codex Mendoza of about two decades earlier.
