Tlalcuauh (MH521v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Tlalcuauh (perhaps "Land-Measuring Rod") shows a rectangular parcel of land (tlalli} with marks that suggest cultivation and, in front of that, a (right) hand holding a stick (cuahuitl). The likely result is the intention of showing the tlalcuahuitl, a land measuring rod.

Added Analysis:

The stick here for measuring is straight and perhaps longer, when compared to the sticks used for cultivation. See examples of the latter below. The dictionary also includes a matlacuahuitl as a tool for measuring land. The Testaments of Toluca, by Caterina Pizzigoni, includes examples of the term matlaccuahuitl, with the added "c," and she translates it as "ten cuahuitl." It is not clear whether the matlacuahuitl of Alonso de Molina should have two c's and thereby refer to ten cuahuitl.
