Tochipaina (MH724v)

Tochipaina (MH724v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Tochipaina (perhaps “Rabbit Runs Fast”) is attested here as a man’s name. It shows the head of a rabbit (tochtli) in profile, looking toward the viewer’s right. A line connects the rabbit’s head with two alternating footprints that represent the verb to run fast (paina). The alternation of the right and then the left foot suggests movement across the landscape.

Added Analysis:

The truncated verb, Pain, is a somewhat common name. A couple of examples appear below. The name Yaopain, which seems to refer to a fast-running warrior, also appears in this collection.
