Tonal (MH709v)

Tonal (MH709v)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Tonal (“Day”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a quincunx with four rounded parts and a circle in the center, but it also has four squared-off protrusions between each rounded part. Inside the rounded parts are U-shapes drawn in black and filled with the color red.

Added Analysis:

This glyph for tonalli is located on the page inside a profile view of a house. The tlacuilo did not add “ichan” (his home) for this one, but on the front side of folio 709 the homes of important men are given glyphs and glossed as being their houses. So, this house is presumed to belong to the man named Tonal right above and to the right of the house. For similar renditions of tonalli, singly or in compounds, see some other examples, below. One will find some overlap in design between tonalli and ilhuitl, both of which can mean day.
