Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name or ethnic affiliation, Xalixcatl (“Person from Xalixco,” or Jalisco today) is attested here as male. It shows small circles and large dots that suggest sand (xalli). Above the sand is the frontal view of a human eye (ixtli). This eye shows European artistic influence. The suffix (-catl) suggesting an affiliation is not shown visually.
