Cuauhnepantepec (TR28r)

Cuauhnepantepec (TR28r)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This compound glyph of the place name Cuauhnepantepec has three elements. One of the most prominent is a neat pile of firewood (cuahuitl), which provide the start to the place name, Cuauh- (which in a place name probably means "woods"). Above the wood is a checked rectangle. Perhaps this stands for the nepantla (in the middle, in between). Finally, the upright, bell-shaped, green hill or mountain provides the phonetic indicator for the locative suffix, -tepec, at or on the hill. The hill has curly rocky outcroppings on the slopes and a horizontal white band at the base. The resulting place name in English translation might be "At the Mountain in the Middle of the Woods."
