Cuauhquechollan (MH868r)
This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the place name Cuauhquechollan (“Place of Eagles with Rich Feathers”) shows an eagle perched atop a three-dimensional hill or mountain. Its wings are spread-eagle, and its feathers are drawn in a prominent way, and some are colored gray. The eagle’s beak is open and what may be its tongue is protruding. A small heart appears at the tip of the tongue. Next to the mountain or hill is a Christian church, which seems to serve as a visual locative for the (-tlan) suffix, along with the mountain. The church has a cross on top, a bell tower, arching windows and doors, columns, and elaborate designs.

That the tlacuilo would take the trouble to include these details suggests a possible pride in the church. The fuller gloss names the patron saint as Santa María de Jesús.
