Calmecahuateuctli (MH908r)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the title Calmecahuateuctli (perhaps “Lord of the School” or the “Lord of Calmecahuacan”) shows a noble in profile, seated and facing the viewer’s right. He wears a diadem (likely a copilli, a symbol for tlatoani) with two borders, one with eyes, and the main part with a dotted diamond pattern. His cloak is tied on his right shoulder and covers most of his body, although his right side is uncovered, showing a loincloth waistband. The cloak has shading that gives it a three-dimensionality. He sits on a low stool with stepped legs.

Added Analysis:

The spelling of what must be meant to be teuctli or tecuhtli is unusual here, with an inserted “i” and “c.” This unusual spelling also appears on f. 904v. The “Tecui-” start to a name does appear in a name ending in the diminutive -ton (see below).
