cuachpanitl (LTlaxUT1a)
This iconographic example is included here for possible comparisons with Nahuatl hieroglyphs. It is an example of a Spanish flag bearer. He carries a large pink-toned banner, which the Nahuas might have called a cuachpanitl, although we have no gloss to prove this. The flag is drawn in a way to show three-dimensionality, a style that would have been learned by the tlacuilo from colonial instructors at a later date. The light brown color of the flag post or stick suggests that it is made of wood. The flag bearer is wearing a red tunic that has a belt of a light brown, perhaps made of leather. He also wears a rounded hat with an upright brim. It is painted a turquoise blue or blue-green. He may have tan-colored tights on. He is shown in profile, facing the viewer’s right, and he appears to be walking.

Another banner carried by a Spaniard that appears in this digital collection has the royal arms painted on it. That one is attached to a lance, and the bearer wears an armored helmet. We also have an expedition of Mexica warriors on their way to Florida, and they have adopted the practice of being led by a flag bearer. The Mexica have made the practice their own, however, by having an eagle on a nopal cactus painted on the flag. See below.
