Amiztlato (MH643v)
Simplex Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the simplex glyph for the personal name Amiztlato ("Leader among Hunters," attested here as a man's name) shows the head of a wildcat or mountain lion (miztli) in profile, looking toward the viewer's right. Its hair is mottled, and it has protruding teeth. The "A-" start to the name and the "-tlato" ending to the name are not shown visually here.

Added Analysis:

The glyphs in this digital collection for Amiztlato vary somewhat, from a simplex to several compounds (of two or three parts). The spray of water coming out of the animal's mouth can have a dual role, for the A- (from atl, water) and the -tlato (from tlatoa, to speak).
