Glyph or Iconographic Image Description: 

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Chimaltemoc ("Shield Descended") is attested here as a man's name. It shows a was shield (chimalli) with four half-circles around the inside of the perimeter of a large circle, evenly spaced. In the middle of the large circle is also a small circle. The result is a quincunx. Descending off below and at an angle to the viewer's left are two alternating footprints. These prints represent the preterit (temoc) form of the verb temo).

Footprint glyphs have a wide range of translations. In this collection, so far, we can attest to yauh, xo, pano, -pan, paina, temo, nemi, quetza, otli, iyaquic hualiloti, huallauh, tetepotztoca, totoco, -tihui, and the vowel "o." Other research (Herrera et al, 2005, 64) points to additional terms, including: choloa, tlaloa, totoyoa, eco, aci, quiza, maxalihui, centlacxitl, and xocpalli.
