Xipal (MH632v)

Xipal (MH632v)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Xipal (perhaps "Lips") is attested here as the name of a woman. It is presented entirely phonetically, with the Xi- coming from turquoise (xihuitl) tesserae and the -pal coming from banner (panitl). A turquoise banner would more likely be Xipan, which is also found in this collection. More research into these constructions would be useful. Juan José Batalla Rosado (2021, 477) discusses the xi- syllable, which is somewhat rare and very important.
