Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This compound glyph for the place name Cayahualco consists of a profile-view of a house or building (calli) with a circle around it (yahualli). These are black-line drawings. The house or building is white with the exception of the timbers, which have a t-shape and a terracotta color.

Added Analysis:

The -yahualco ending on a place name may provide a locative suffix meaning "encircling." In this case, the result may be "Encircling the House" or "Around the House." Starr thought the translation should be a place surrounded by houses. See also Tlachyahualco (below, right), which might mean "Encircling the Ball Court."
