Matlatlal (MH779r)
This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Matlatlal is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a frontal view of an upright (right) hand and part of the forearm. The hand and forearm have spots on them. These spots are reminiscent of signs of cultivation on plots of land (tlalli), but it is unclear whether the -tlal- in this name is indicated phonetically. The term for hand, maitl, represents the Ma- start to the name, but whether semantically and/or phonetically is unclear. The gloss of the name has a reduplication in it, which could refer to an intensification, whether speaking of rubbing (a lot) with the hands or running a lot on all fours. (See the verb possibilities in the dictionary field.)

Further analysis of the translation of this personal name is required. The verb is a challenge to determine given the apocopation. Another possibility is a reference to a noun, something with an intense blue-green color. The personal name Matlal (or the element Matlal- that is part of a name) appears multiple times in the Matrícula de Huexotzinco, and it usually refers to a flower that has this blue-green color.
