Chalchiuhtlatonac (MH882r)

Chalchiuhtlatonac (MH882r)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Chalchiuhtlatonac (perhaps “Greenstone on Which the Sun Shone”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows a round greenstone (chalchihuitl), with its four small beads evenly placed around the perimeter. Outside the circle are sun rays that convey the verb tona, for the sun to shine. And the sun, with a frontal view of its face, seems to have shone (in the preterit) on the chalchihuitl, making it shine more than normal. (See the article, “Vibrance in Glyphs,” in the left-hand navigation bar.)
