Iconography

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This example of iconography features a large, yellow, woven mat (petlatl) on the floor at the entrance to a building. We are naming the mat based on similar examples that are glossed in Nahuatl, but this particular mat does not have a Nahuatl gloss. The mat completely fills the entryway to the building, which is shown in a frontal view. The entrance is framed by large, terracotta-colored, wooden beams. Two vertical beams flank the entrance and support one large lintel or cross beam at the top of the doorway. The interior is a dark gray or purple. The building itself is white. Some flat white stone paving appears in front of the entrance, and what appear to be stairs can be seen on the right side of the building. The mat is woven in a neat herringbone pattern, very typical, as other examples show below.
