Tecpanecatl (MH705r)

Tecpanecatl (MH705r)
Compound Glyph

Glyph or Iconographic Image Description:

This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name or title, Tecpanecatl, is attested here as pertaining to a man. The glyph shows a profile view of a diadem that would be worn by a tecuhtli (lord). It is triangular, with a mesh pattern, and (apparently) a tie running along the base of the diadem. This symbol for tecuhtli is a phonetic indicator for the Tec- start to the name. To the right of this crown-like equivalent is an upright rectangular flag or banner, flying toward the viewer’s right. This banner is a phonetic indicator for the -pan- part of the name. The -ecatl suffix is not shown visually in this compound.

Added Analysis:

Glyphs for the name or title Tecpanecatl often involve a cuauhtecpantli, a wooden construction that may have had a protective function, like a railing, a reading suggested by Marc Thouvenot (personal communication, 30 September 2024). One of these includes a banner (MH492v), and another a flint knife (tecpatl). This range of visual expressions suggests that there was no easy way to represent the name more directly. But the cuauhtecpantli is the most common element.
