Toztemal (MH895v)
This black-line drawing of the compound glyph for the personal name Toztemal (perhaps “Yellow-Headed Parrot-Sorcerer”) is attested here as a man’s name. The glyph shows the head of a man in profile, looking toward the viewer’s right. On his head is a bird’s head, apparently a bird called toztli (a yellow-headed parrot). The beak of the parrot in this image is a long curving one that reaches down to connect with the mouth of the man. The back of the parrot’s head shows extremely long, horizontal, streaming feathers. It is this feature that may point to -timal (another spelling for -temal), the name of a man mentioned in the Historia Tolteca Chichimeca (1598) as having necromantic powers.

The association between a bird and the powers of a sorcerer may also be suggested in the names Cuauhtemal.
