xicalli (Mdz23v)
This simplex glyph for the noun xicalli (gourd vessel) shows a frontal view of a yellow bowl with a round bottom and a red band near the rim. Running through the red band are two horizontal black lines. While we do not have a Nahuatl-language gloss to ensure that this is a xicalli, there is a gloss in Spanish ("xicaras") which makes it clear what this gourd vessel would have been called in Nahuatl. The term xicalli entered Spanish as the loanword, "jícara."
